Franz West (Austrian, 1947-2012) Onkelstuhl (Uncle Chair), 2007 Steel, woven textile bands 33-1x2 x 20 x 16-1x2 inches (85.1 x 50.8 x 41.9 cm) Stamped P826 to base PROVENANCE: Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, Frankfurt, Germany, 2007; Acquired from above by present owner, 2008. Franz West, an accomplished artist who achieved international acclaim for his work, explored furniture throughout his career as he created objects and sculpture that encourage the participation and intervention of the viewer. His furniture is frequently made of simple construction and ready materials, often industrial, and they are as reductive as his sculpture. Their simplicity of form belies the complexity of their meaning within his greater body of work, which can be found in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Tate, London, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among other public collections. He was honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

Condition Report: Presents well with vibrant woven upholstery unique to this example, light oxidation to legs, minor area of discoloration to seat only visible on close inspection, scattered areas of shatter to blue bands on seat, all wear commensurate with age and light use. The woven straps recently replaced by the artist's studio.
