Franz Winninger (1896-1960) - Voyage en Éthiopie (1930)
“Watercolor” style painting
Signed lower right by Franz Winninger (1896-1960) .
This work imbued with the colors of Africa, dated around a hundred years ago, was produced in Ethiopia by the painter on behalf of the Hermannsburg mission to Ras Tafari, who later became the Negus and the emperor Haile Selassie.
The Viennese art historian and critic Arthur Rössler discovered his early talent and took him to the painter Franz Čižek at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. This is where the foundations of his work oriented towards nature were laid. The meeting with HENRI MATISSE in Paris broadens his color palette. The watercolors of trips to Africa also reveal this through their colors.
