oil/cardboard 48,5 x 33,5 cm

Franz von Zülow (1883–1963) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, and designer associated with Viennese Modernism and Classical Modernism. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under Felician Myrbach and Carl Otto Czeschka from 1903 to 1906 and developed his characteristic paper-cut stencil technique in 1907. As early as 1908, he participated in the *Kunstschau* (Art Show) organized by Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann and designed wallpaper patterns for Hoffmann’s Palais Stoclet in Brussels. As a collaborator with the Wiener Werkstätte, he created illustrations, posters, children's books, and designs for wallpaper, textiles, and carpets, operating within the immediate circle of Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser. After World War I, he increasingly turned to painting; landscapes, rural scenes, still lifes, portraits, and fantastical imagery became key themes in his diverse body of work. From the 1920s onwards, Zülow divided his time between Vienna and Upper Austria and was a member of the Zinkenbach Artists' Colony on Lake Wolfgang. Zülow’s work combines the ornamental flatness of Art Nouveau with elements of Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Austrian folk art. His artistic circle ranged from Klimt, Hoffmann, and Kolo Moser to Egon Schiele and Anton Faistauer; in 1918, Schiele even advocated for Zülow’s admission to the newly founded "Sonderbund of Austrian Artists." Within the Zinkenbach Artists' Colony, Zülow worked alongside artists such as Ferdinand Kitt, Josef Dobrowsky, Ernst Huber, Georg Merkel, Louise Merkel-Romée, and Sergius Pauser—artists with whom he shared a particular interest in landscape and figurative painting. Following the ban on painting imposed during the Nazi era, Zülow resumed his artistic career after 1945; he began teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts in Linz in 1949 and became president of the Mühlviertel Artists' Guild in 1955. His body of work thus exemplifies the fusion of the Wiener Werkstätte, Art Nouveau, modern graphic art, and Austrian landscape painting.
