Fratelli Toso for Salviati & Co. Venice, ca. 1910.
Large Millefiori goblet.
Blown glass.
Measurements: 42 cm (height); 22 cm (largest diameter).
Rare and unusual, both for its size and its structure, millefiori goblet, created in the Fratelli Toso factory, ca. 1910. It is made in blown glass with the murrina technique, in various colours, decorated with side handles and a foot with mythological fish.
The murrines are different sections of glass rods, with a great variety of colours and designs, which are hot combined to form flowers, stars, dots or lines. The murrines are placed in an orderly fashion, either on a horizontal metal surface (marble) or inside a mould, in order to collect them with a portion of incandescent glass and blow them with the help of a cane.
Fratelli Toso is a family business founded in Murano in 1856 by the Toso brothers, one of the most traditional Murano families, which was based in the former Scuola Grande San Giovanni dei Battuti. In 1902, after the death of the last of the founders, the second generation of the family took over. Thanks to the collaboration of influential artists such as Guido Cadorin and Hans Stoltemberg Lerche, from 1910 onwards the company acquired a solid reputation on the Murano island, whose only rival at that time was the Barovier family.
