Fred Packer (American, 1886-1956) Not Now — Oh, Not Now!, New York Mirror newspaper cartoon, circa 1948 India ink, blue pencil, and lithographic crayon on heavyweight paper 15-3x4 x 10-1x2 inches (40.0 x 26.7 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Packer Frederick Little Packer was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1952 for his 1951 New York Mirror cartoon of President Harry Truman lambasting White House reporters: "Your editors ought to have more sense than to print what I say!" He was a commercial artist in New York and briefly with the New York Journal before joining the staff of the Mirror in 1933. After fourteen years of Democratic Party control of Congress the Republicans won control of both Houses in 1946, and they set about overhauling the tax system and other aspects of the Roosevelt and Truman agendas. Their triumph was short-lived, however, as Democrats once again assumed control in the 1948 elections when President Truman won election to a full term. In this lively original the veteran New Deal mechanic in the auto shop tells his G.O.P. co-workers they might as well "let it alone," for the Democrats were coming back to power in 1948.
