Dated 1897 and signed lower right. In a modern carved and gilded frame. Sight size 36" x 58, overall 42" x 64". Moderate inpainting, primarily on edges, one small area in the sky. At age 13, Thompson was employed by the Pairpoint Co. as an artist. He attended the Swain School of Design and was mentored by R. Swain Gifford. He believed in psychic experiences and thought that R. Swain Gifford was guiding his hand. Provenance: this monumental work hung in the Wamsutta Club for many years and was purchased by the consignor in the famous Wamsutta Club auction.
