Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (51.5 x 61.0 cm), in a period frame.
Condition: Varnish discoloration, surface grime.

Provenance: Townshend Collection.

N.B. Trinity Church, United Church, and Center Church are the three historic churches on the east side of the New Haven Green, which was laid out in 1638. All three churches reflect the theocratic roots of the historic city of New Haven. Henry H. Townshend was the fifth generation of the Townshend family to live in New Haven, since his forebear Jeremiah Townsend arrived there from Boston in 1739. Mr. Townshend was a member of the First Church of Christ in New Haven, (Center Church), pictured here appropriately in the center with the tall steeple. The Center Church was gathered in 1639. The building shown here is the fourth meeting house of the Center Church, designed by the famous New Haven architect Ithiel Town between 1812 and 1814.
