Frederick Richard Lee, RA, British 1798-1879- Burnham Beeches; watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed, titled, and dated 'Burnham Beeches / F. R. Lee. RA. 1857' on the reverse of the sheet, 30.5 x 48 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lee was celebrated for his landscape paintings. Indeed, he likely painted the settings for his collaborations with prominent contemporaries such as Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902). The British landscape and its variety was clearly a constant source of inspiration to the artist, with his works depicting expansive vistas, riverside scenes, and canopied woodland (as in the present work) alike.
