Fremont F. Ellis was an American landscape painter celebrated for his luminous depictions of New Mexico. Born in Virginia City, Montana, he was largely self-taught and first moved to Santa Fe in 1919. In 1921, he became a founding member of Los Cinco Pintores, a group that helped shape Santa Fe’s emerging art community. Working in an Impressionist style, Ellis used rich color and expressive brushwork to capture the region’s changing light, mountain scenery, and rural villages. His enduring attachment to the Southwestern landscape sustained a painting career spanning more than six decades.
