In 1921, he became a founding member of Los Cinco Pintores, a group that helped shape Santa Fe’s emerging art community. Working in an Impressionist style, Ellis used rich color and expressive brushwork to capture the region’s changing light, mountain scenery, and rural villages. His enduring attachment to the Southwestern landscape sustained a painting career spanning more than six decades.
