LOT 2057

French Musical Automaton Doll in Display Case.

[ translate ]

Appealing musical clockwork automaton, 19" (50cm) tall, including the base, with the little girl standing just 15" from head to toe. When wound, and the on/off lever is pulled, music plays and she raises her right hand up then lowers it, and around her neck there is a silk ribbon supporting an oval shaped base, on which are cloth flowers and a cone shaped object made of similar material as the dress, when the cone is raised, it reveals a little all-bisque doll standing on the oval base. It is likely that at one time the doll was meant to dance, but there is no movement at present. Both hands on the large doll are well defined bisque, with long fingers. The open mouth bisque head is incised on the back of the head "1300-6 DEP S & H". She has blue glass eyes with silk eyelashes and a flat cut neck socket. Her clothing is of the period, if not original, and is of strawberry silk and lace with cloth shoes, and she has a honey colored human hair wig in long curls with bangs. The item has the original heavy brass key, with the "LB" formed into the key. Affixed to the side of the box underneath the drape is an old lithographed label printed "Modele DePose", and written in old script is the word "Estudiantina". The mechanism works well as described, though perhaps at one time the head turned and the eyes blinked, which it no longer does. There is slight and acceptable surface dust. Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: Case: 20 - 1/2" x 11" x 11".
