French School,

early 18th Century-

Portrait of a lady as Diana, three-quarter length, holding an archer's bow;

oil on canvas, oval, 82.2 x 66.5 cm. (VAT charged on hammer price).

Note: The depiction of Diana the Huntress was a commonly explored theme in European Art during the 17th and 18th Centuries, with artists depicting well-known female aristocracy in the guise of Diana. A patroness of the countryside, hunters, and the Moon, Diana was associated with fertility, childbirth and the protection of women during labour. The present work, likely to have been completed in the early 18th Century, exhibits resemblances to the portraits of Jean Ranc (1674-1735), a French artist who carried out commissions for the nobility, often including in their portraits references to classical antiquity, as well as mythological and allegorical themes.
