French school of the 18th century - Mediterranean harbour scene at sunset
\Artist: French school of the 18th century
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 76_2_105_cm
Large and very fine painting depicting a Mediterranean harbor at sunset (or sunrise?) , with fishermen pushing a rowing boat beside a fortress, with a (war) ship beyond. The painting is very skillfully painted. We haven't found a signature on it yet, but there may be remnants of a text on the ton in the lower middle, it's difficult to see with the naked eye. In the catalog raisonné of Vernet (by Ingerson-Smouse) , we did not find the same composition depicted, however starting from page 61 (under coucher-de-soleil) , there are some descriptions that could fit our painting. It's a very beautiful 18th century work and merits further research. In good condition, relined, some small scattered areas of inpainting visible under UV light. Frame will be given as a gift. Canvas measures approx. 76*105cm, with the frame: 95*124cm.
