French school of the early 20th century.
"Pan playing the flute".
Terracotta.
Measurements: 93 cm. high.
Sculpture of the god Pan playing the flute, characterised with an anatomy of prominent muscles and an expressive, sly looking face. Pan (the Roman Faun) was the god of shepherds and flocks in Greek mythology, as well as an allegory of fertility and male sexuality. He was especially venerated in Arcadia, although there were no large shrines in his honour in that region. In Roman mythology, this god is identified as a Faun. Endowed with great power and sexual appetite, he pursued nymphs and girls through the forests in search of his favours. He lived in the company of the nymphs in a grotto in Parnassus called Coricia. He was believed to have prophetic gifts and was part of Dionysus' entourage, as he was supposed to follow Dionysus in his habits. He was a hunter, healer and musician. He lived in the woods and forests, running after sheep and scaring away men who entered his grounds.
