Friedrich Nerly - Two vedute (San Giorgio Maggiore and Cannareggio with Palazzo Labia)
Friedrich Nerly
Two vedute (San Giorgio Maggiore and Cannareggio with Palazzo Labia)
Oil on canvas. 28 x 21.5 cm each.
Signed lower right: F. Nerly.
The German Romantic artist Friedrich Nery lived in Venice for over four decades and gained fame for his masterful vedute, in which he captured the city's unique atmosphere. His works combine precise naturalism with a distinctly poetic, at times dramatic, use of light. This is particularly striking in the atmospheric evening twilight of these two small vedute, which come from a private Italian collection.
They depict Cannareggio with the Palazzo Labia in the north of the main Venetian island, as well as San Giorgio Maggiore, the separate island located south of it.
Provenance
Private collection, Italy.
