Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow (1788-1862) - Mater Dolorosa (Pietà)

[ translate ]

Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow (1788-1862) . The painting shows the body of Jesus Christ, taken from the cross, lying in the bosom of Mary, the Mother of God. In the foreground on the right, one of the three Maries kisses his injured hand. Kneeling at the front left, Mary Magdalene gently holds Jesus' legs in her arms, an ointment bowl stands beside her. In the background on the right there is another one of the three Marian with the crown of thorns in her hand. On the left John bows in front of the body of Christ holding the holy nails. This painting is impressive in its entirety - especially because of its round-arched finish. The trapezoidal grouping of John and the three Marian around the central Pieta creates the illusion of a semi-circular arrangement. This representation of the Pieta was created by Wilhelm von Schadow and was shown at the Exhibition of Christian Art, Düsseldorf, in 1909. Provenance: Herr Jean (Hans) Pullem, Dusseldorf Exhibitions: Ausstellung für Christliche Kunst Düsseldorf 1909 Overall dimensions: approx. 69 x 58 cm. The frame of the painting is not part of the auction, but will be included free of charge.
