Fritz Scholder was an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor of Luiseño and European ancestry whose bold imagery helped transform the representation of Native Americans in contemporary art. Born in Minnesota, he taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe from 1964 to 1969. Combining expressive brushwork, intense color, and elements of Pop Art, Scholder challenged romanticized stereotypes with complex portrayals of contemporary Indigenous life. His later work explored broader themes of mortality, spirituality, and the human figure, establishing a legacy that extends beyond his celebrated Native American subjects.
