THE HUPMOBILE

Following a distinguished career with Oldsmobile, Ford, and Regal, Robert Craig Hupp established his eponymous Hupp Motor Car Company in 1909 in Detroit, Michigan. The first Hupmobile was a small, four-cylinder 16.9hp Runabout with sliding gear transmission and this car, designated the Model 20, found 1,618 customers in the first year. Similar in concept to the European "voiturettes" of the era, it was priced at $750 and Emil Nelson's engineering skills produced a car that was sophisticated and reliable. This was proven between November 1910 and January 1912 when a Hupmobile touring car completed a round-the-world promotional tour of 48,600 miles crossing 26 different countries. Hupp left the company in 1911 following a disagreement with the board, but Hupmobile continued, the Model 32 of 1912 and onwards, an all-steel bodied car, being the mainstay of pre-Great War production.

THE CAR OFFERED

Produced in 1910, this Hupmobile Model 20 Runabout hails from the second year of Hupp production, representing the genesis of this innovative American carmaker. Delightfully presented in red with black mudguards and upholstery, it has been authentically restored to maintain its period charm and appears to have been very well looked-after during its time with the Carlsons. Acquired from Bonhams' 2003 Brookline, Massachusetts auction, it has been part of the Carlson collection ever since. An excellent example of the sporty Model 20, despite its older restoration it is still in fine fettle and has it has been maintained in tour-ready mechanical condition. The file includes an original Boston Hupmobile dealer tag, shedding some light on the possible early history of this charming Hupp.

Brass headlamps flank the radiator with its distinctive high fill tube, and features include a single carriage lamp, single tail lamp, and a rarely seen convertible top. For the 1910 model year, Hupmobile rated the compact 110 cubic-inch inline-four at 18/20 horsepower, which is enough to move the 1,100-pound runabout along with ease, though the 2-speed transmission can present some unique challenges on big hills – all part of the fun of veteran motoring!

A wonderful entry into the world of early Brass Era automobiles, this Hupmobile will undoubtedly delight its next custodian on a variety of enthusiast gatherings and driving events. Always a charming car, and in both fine cosmetic and running condition, it represents is an excellent opportunity.
