THE OLDSMOBILE DELTA 88

The 88, or Eighty-Eight, moniker was the name given to Oldsmobile's full-size car line for a half a century, from 1949 until 1999. For the first half of its production run, from 1960 until 1974, the 88 was Oldsmobile's top selling line. Offered in a range of different trim lines that seemingly tracked the space- and jet-age predilections of the American public, starting with DeLuxe and Super but quickly getting to Rocket and Jetstar, it was constantly changing with a new generation of cars being introduced ever two to four years. One thing stayed consistent though: the cars were always handsomely trimmed upgrades from their Chevy brethren and they were powered by a big V8.

1975 carries the unique distinction of being the last year for the Delta 88 Convertible. The top-of-the-line model for Olds in that year, a big push was made to emphasize the outgoing body style with a print ad featuring the headline "Today a beautiful Olds convertible. Tomorrow, a collector's item." It must have worked—sales figures nearly doubled from 1974 with a 7,181 Delta 88 Convertibles rolling off the Lansing, Michigan factory line by the time production ceased.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
According to the original dealer paperwork included with the car, this Oldsmobile was purchased new through Pace Oldsmobile, Inc in New Rochelle, New York and delivered to Tom Ferrara on June 12, 1975 with 3 miles on the odometer. Finished in Glacier Blue over white vinyl, the droptop was handsomely equipped with radio, air conditioning, power top and windows, and more.

In the care of the Ferrara family for the subsequent 48 years, 94,269 miles are currently showing on the odometer—a figure believed to be from new. The perfect lounge lizard cruiser, it pairs just as well with a polyester jump suit and ABBA or a wide collar brown suit and Marvin Gaye. Either way, it is the perfect car with which to get down your bad self.
