G. Custer Partial ALS En Route to Texas, "by way of the Old Mexican Road…"
Partial ALS

Partial autograph letter signed by George Custer (1839-1876) as Major General. 1p, measures 7.75" x 9.75", n.p., ca. July 1865. The final page of a letter, signed in the lower right with rank, "G. Custer/ Maj Genl", regarding plans for troop movements as U.S. forces begin to arrive in Texas. Lightly toned, with faint offsetting to margins. Flattened letter folds; rough edge at left where integral page was removed. Else, very good. Approximately 130 words in his hand!

In part:

"I have arranged for the delivery of a sufficient quantity of beef, on the hoof, to satisfy our wants to The Sabine. Beyond that beef is abundant. In a communication to me dated July 6th the Major Genl Commdg authorized me to proceed by way of the Old Mexican road through Midway and Crockett. This was owing to a reported scarcity of fuel upon the Burrs Ferry road. As I have provided against this and as the latter route is the most direct and best watered I will move by way of Burrs Ferry and will send scouts in advance to Houston who can meet me with any ordered intended for me to receive."

By July 1865, Custer was transitioning from his Civil War service to peacetime duties, when he was ordered to Texas to command a cavalry division tasked with enforcing Reconstruction policies. Custer and his troops began their movement into Texas that August, crossing through the Sabine River by way of Burr's Ferry, which ran along the border with Louisiana. They were later mustered out in November of 1865, replaced by the regulars of the U.S. 6th Cavalry Regiment.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
