G. Harvey (American, 1933-2017) Winter's Eve, 1970 Oil on canvas 9 x 16 inches (22.9 x 40.6 cm) Signed and dated lower left: G. Harvey / 1970 Titled on the stretcher: Winter's Eve PROVENANCE: Private collection, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gerald Harvey Jones, better known as G. Harvey, grew up in the Texas Hill Country listening to his father and grandfather tell stories about ranch life and frontier days in Texas. His grandfather was a cowboy during the trail-driving era when legends grew up along the dusty trails north from Texas. Family stories of wild cattle and tough men were absorbed and became the genesis of Harvey's art. He taught full-time and painted nights and weekends for several years. He lived in cowboy bunkhouses for periods of time so that he could immerse himself in his subject. "I woke up with the cowboys, warmed myself by their campfires, drank their coffee and saw the same sunrises and sunsets they did along with seeing everything in between. So, although I was a professional painter, I was able to paint from the perspective of my subjects" Harvey recalls. Winter's Eve, 1970 beautifully depicts a horse-drawn carriage making a trek through the back country. The sunlight glistens off the freshly fallen snow and warms the bundled up riders and their horses. The lively brushwork brings vitality to this seemingly calm scene while the cool shadows create a sense of mystery. The atmospheric chill burdens the cowboys as they head out for a long work day; something Harvey understood firsthand.
