G. Verdi. Large cabinet-style photograph signed and inscribed, February 1895

[ translate ]

VERDI, GIUSEPPE

Large cabinet-style photograph signed and inscribed at the foot of the image and on the mount ("A Diomede Martinelli G. Verdi")

24.5 x 17cm, by A. Ferrario of Milan, Milan, February 1895. some very light spotting and browning, a few marks and two small cuts to the right of the image

Verdi spent February 1895 in Milan, making arrangements and studying designs for his long-planned "Casa di Riposo", a benevolent home for musicians, and on the 17th declared testamentary provisions for it. Diomede Martinelli, Verdi's dedicatee, may have been a relative of Amilcare Martinelli, who was Giuseppina Verdi's lawyer and named by her as executor in 1897. Diomede seems likely to be the man with that distinctive name who in 1885 had published a book on gastroenteritis, with the title Della gastro-enterite gangrenosa del filugello comunemente conosciuta sotto il nome di flaccidezza: studio.

LITERATURE:
M.J. Phillips-Matz, Verdi. A Biography (1993), pp. 730 & 742-743; see also F. Walker, The Man Verdi (1962), p. 506.
