Dragoon Campaigns to the Rocky Mountains; being a History of the Enlistment, Organization, and First Campaigns of the Regiment of United States Dragoons; together with Incident of a Soldier's Life, and Sketches of Scenery and Indian Character. By a Dragoon. New York: Wiley & Long, 1836

8vo (7 5/8 x 4 5/8 in.; 193 x 118 mm). Foxed, a few marginal tears or chips, one or two ink stains, some dampstaining to upper margin. Original purple cloth over boards, spine gilt-lettered with gilt horse and rider; faded, minor soiling, fraying to head and tail of spine.

First edition. The first book to ever mention a poker game, in print, in English

The present volume recounts the first prairie campaign of the Regiment of Dragoons after its formation in 1833. Commanded by Colonel Henry Dodge, the regiment was accompanied by the artist George Catlin. Some have suggested that the true author was William L. Gordon Miller, but the book is generally listed under Hildreth.
