scolding her for writing to him in English and pointing out a spelling mistake, but then promising that he would not leave Panchgani without meeting her, in Gujarati, 2 pages, 8vo, Panchgani, 17 July 1944, mounted, framed, and glazed (225 x 175mm); loose in mount with minor abrasions where previously mounted
Shireen Virji was a sculptor who had graduated from the Royal College of Arts in London in 1941. She was severely afflicted with arthritis, however, and in 1944 was living in the family home in the beautiful hill station of Panchgani, Maharashtra. Gandhi spent the month of August 1944 in Panchgani recuperating from his imprisonment in Pune. During this period he allowed Shireen Virjee to sculpt a bust of him, which is now held by the Asia Plateau conference centre of the Initiative of Change in Panchgani.
