Author:
Title: GANGSTERS CAN'T WIN No. 1
Place Published:
Publisher:D.S. [Indicia: D.S.Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: February-March, 1948
Description: VG/Fine (5.0). A few nicks and stress marks to spine, mild staple pull, tiny chip to top right corner of front cover, a few tiny chips to back cover, 1" tear to back cover at spine, sun shadow to back cover. Cream to light tan pages.

Credits: Cover: Ken Battefield. Art: Bill Fraccio, George Gregg, Tex Blaisdell, Marcia Snyder.

GPAnalysis: A 5.0 sold for $384 in 11/22.Disclaimer Blamer: A skull-faced narrator spouts the obligatory anti-crime disclaimer in tiny type on Ken Battefield's cover, as a gunsel plugs one cop in the puss and another cop straight thru the heart. Doc Wertham claimed pre-Code publishers added lukewarm anti-crime messages to their lurid mags as a cynical sop to placate critics, all the while wallowing in over-the-top violence geared towards tykes. And let's face it – the good doctor wasn't just whistlin' Dixie, as a quick glance under the covers of this overheated crime rag demonstrates.

A crook shoots a guy in the mouth with the bullet exiting the back of his head; a hard-boiled yegg cracks wise as he goes to the gallows ("Say, warden, would you like to hear a joke?"); a gangster smacks his moll and chokes her out, then a rival blows him to smithereens with a grenade; the babealicious "bobbed-hair bandit" ditches dishpan hands for a life of violent crime ("Whoever said that the female is the weaker sex? I don't feel weak with this gat in my hand... Bye bye dirty dishes – hello big time!").______________________________________________________________

A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200. These books always go fast so don't delay. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
