GEBEL KAMIL Metallic Meteorite, Ungrouped Ataxite - 796 g

[ translate ]

discovered a structure with the help of Google Earth, which turned out to be an impact crater with a diameter of 45 meters and a depth of 8 meters. Satellite images show that this crater must be very young geologically, since the ejection blanket is easily recognizable, they estimate it to be less than 5,000 years old. In the vicinity of the crater, the impact glass could be identified. During two Italian-Egyptian expeditions to this crater in February 2009 and February 2010, more than 1. 6 tons of meteorite material were collected. The meteorite is classified as a non-clustered iron meteorite. This lot is a magnificent specimen from Gebel Kamil, which presents the typical characteristic of this famous ataxite, with one of its faces marked with small irregularities in the form of little dots as it has been exposed to the impacts of desert sand grains. Excellent quality! It has an ataxite structure with crystals of schreibersite, troilite and daubréelite Actually, they are a piece of an asteroid core. In the differentiation process, when the asteroid is a ball of magma, during its formation, iron and nickel settle to the core of the asteroid, as they are the heaviest elements. After cooling, the asteroid metal core is formed. Through catastrophic collisions, the asteroid and its core break and the fragments remain in space, until a piece falls into our planet. They are estimated to account for 5. 7% of falls.
