GEO-FOURRIER (Lyon, 1898 – Quimper, 1966) Georges FOURRIER, known as
"Gwenola la Bigouden," 1939
Woodcut. Titled and numbered 16/100 in the lower left corner. Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Engraved and produced by the publisher Takamizawa in Tokyo.
Height: 36.5 cm. Width: 25.5 cm. Visible. (Pinholes).
Geo-Fourrier collaborated with Takamizawa on four prints, including our Gwenola. He would send his gouaches to the Tokyo-based publisher. These works, passing through the hands of Japanese master engravers, were transformed by that incomparable Japanese spirit. A proof is currently on display as part of the exhibition “Geo-Fourrier: An Adventurer Explores Quimper Pottery,” being held at the Quimper Pottery Museum. It is accompanied by the following commentary: “[These works] were certainly, for Geo-Fourrier, an accomplishment, a source of great satisfaction, perhaps even a culmination.”
(From the exhibition catalog, Soubigou, Paris, 2025. Work reproduced on p. 19).
