Separate volume 1 (of 3) of a very rare Dutch translation by the Dutch bookseller Simon de Vries (ca. 1630-1708) based on a German translation by the German geographer Hieronymus Ditzel (1642-1710) of a general description of the world by the French author Antoine Phérotée de La Croix (ca. 1640-ca. 1715) of which the first French edition, titled “Nouvelle Methode Pour Apprendre Facilement La Geographie Universelle” was published in 1690 in Lyon. Our volume concerning the geography of i.a. Germany, Italy, the Low Countries, Portugal & Spain and illustrated with maps engraved by i.a. the Dutch print-maker Anthonie de Winter (ca. 1652-1713) based on designs by i.a. the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667). Ex bibliotheca C.F.C.G. Boissevain (with his book-plate mounted on upper paste-down). – Lacks 1 map of the Low Countries (“De zeventien Nederlantsche Provintiën [..]”, between pp. 68-69) & 2 binder’s index-leaves at the beginning. A few imperfections (foot of spine dam. (expertly restored), binding sl. rubbed/ worn, a few maps partly trimmed in lower blank margin, the preliminary leaves with small waterstain in inner blank margin, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in good condition.
