T’Amsterdam, Gedrukt by François Halma [..], 1705, [6],480,[74 index] pp. With engraved frontisp., engraved title-vignette, 53 (fold.) double-p. engraved maps (of i.a. Africa, Arabia, Asia, Black Sea, Brazil, California, Canada, Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Ceylon, Chili, China, Congo, Dutch East Indies, Egypt, Ethiopia, Florida, Guinea, Guyana, India, Japan, Madagascar, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, NORTH & SOUTH AMERICA, Palestine, Paraguay, Persia, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Syria & Turkey) by i.a. A. de Winter after i.a. N. Sanson & 2 double-p. engraved profile views (of Batavia & Mexico City). 4to (ca. 22 x 16,5 cm.), early 18th-cent. calf with gilt ribbed spine, speckled edges.

¶ Tiele 625. Sabin 38504 (“This book is one of paramount merit”). Separate volume 3 (of 3) of a very rare Dutch translation by the Dutch bookseller Simon de Vries (ca. 1630-1708) based on a German translation by the German geographer Hieronymus Ditzel (1642-1710) of a general description of the world by the French author Antoine Phérotée de La Croix (ca. 1640-ca. 1715) of which the first French edition, titled “Nouvelle Methode Pour Apprendre Facilement La Geographie Universelle” was published in 1690 in Lyon. Our volume concerning the geography of i.a. Africa, Asia, Asia Minor, China, Dutch East Indies, India and NORTH & SOUTH AMERICA (incl. the foundation of New Amsterdam) and illustrated with maps engraved by i.a. the Dutch print-maker Anthonie de Winter (ca. 1652-1713) based on designs by i.a. the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667). Ex bibliotheca C.F.C.G. Boissevain (with his book-plate mounted on upper paste-down). – A few defects (spine partly dam. (expertly restored), lower joint sl. splitting, a few maps & text-leaves sl. soiled/ stained in the middle, the preliminary leaves with small waterstain in inner blank margin, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in good condition.
