GEORGE PETER ALEXANDER HEALY (AMERICAN, 1813-1894). half length portrait of "Anna (Nannie) T. Murphy Later Lady Wolseley Wife Of The 9th Bt", wearing a white dress with large cuffs, a cross shaped pendant, silver bangle and rings, holding a pencil in her right hand, oil on canvas, signed and dated in red 'G. P. A. Healy. 1876.' to upper left, 69 by 53cm, in a gilt gesso frame, 93 by 80cm, with a 'Bedel et Compagnie', number '27188', depository label to back of frame. Notes: Lady Anna Theresa Wolseley, 1860-1937 Daughter of Daniel T Murphy and Anna (nee Geoghegan) of Murphy Grant and Co, San Francisco. American heiress, Anna or Nannie as she was known within her family was well travelled both before and during her marriage. Anna and Sir Charles Wolseley 9th Bt, married in 1883, a marriage to 'save the estate' during the American 'gilded age'. Daniel Murphy died suddenly before the full marriage settlement had been paid. Sadly, after bitter court cases between her siblings in America, a settlement of a lower sum was reached and Anna alone held the purse strings. Anna continued to travel and provided a small allowance to her husband, resulting in the decline of the estate. Condition: Some losses to frame, painting no obvious damage or repair, would probably benefit from a clean.
