D. Deliyannis, Yorgos Bouzianis 1885-1959, Adam editions, Athens 1996, no. 196, p. 291 (catalogued), 149 (illustrated).

A master of psychological interpretation and a true visionary, Bouzianis is an artist of international calibre. Being part of the interwar European avant-garde, he transcended the sterile academic tenets with an art of emotional and physical immediacy, seeking, as Oscar Kokoschka once said, to render the vision of people being alive.

Here, by means of impetuous brushwork, forceful treatment of form, and handling of line not simply as a contour but as an organic and structural component of the figure (mainly exemplified in his oils after 1950)¹, the canvas is transformed from a field of representation into an arena of action, where the figure hangs suspended on the verge of abstraction.² The facial characteristics are intentionally distorted and the body contorted, while the surrounding space of shimmering greens, greys, and blues is practically craving to devour the human subject.

Treated in such a frank and direct manner that leaves clear traces of a vigorous painting process, the canvas reflects the artist's firm belief that art should be a vehicle for emotional states rather than a process of beautification. In its inexhaustible vitality, crackling energy, and incessant pulsating rhythm, Trois personnes is a fascinating, demanding, and richly rewarding picture.
