GERALD ZUGMANN (*1938) / JOE BADIAN (*1948) | The 'Reiss-Bar', Vienna 1992
Image Size: 45.8 x 59.6 cm

English

Gelatin silver print on Kodak RC paper 50.5 x 60.8 cm, hand-colored in mixed media, mounted in original paper mat c. 60 x 70 cm, in very good condition. Annotated "Reiss-Bar, Vienna", signed and dated "Joe B_, '92" in pencil on the lower mat. PROVENANCE Estate of Michael Satke. LITERATURE Michael Satke (ed.), Mythos Bar, Vienna 1992, p. 92 (photograph by G. Zugmann from the same series).
When Michael Satke opened the "Reiss-Champagnerbar" at Marco-d'Aviano-Gasse in Vienna in 1977, it was a novelty in many respects: the first project built by the Coop Himmelblau architects, the bar in bright white merely a few seats and plenty of room to stand around an open bar, where only sparkling wines and a single vodka were served; the central design element was a geometrically shaped crack that ran through the walls and ceiling. The bar was the start of a new gastronomy and cultural scene in Vienna, a then grey city, in the centre of which "the pavements were folded up" at dusk. The photo was taken by renowned architectural photographer Gerald Zugmann, the elegant hand-coloring was painted by advertising and graphic designer Joe Badian.
