GILLIS PEETERS THE ELDER | A RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES AND CATTLE BEFORE A FORTIFIED HOUSE

[ translate ]

KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

GILLIS PEETERS THE ELDER
Antwerp 1612 - 1653
A RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES AND CATTLE BEFORE A FORTIFIED HOUSE

signed lower right: G. Peet...
oil on oak panel
35.5 x 58 cm.; 14 x 22⅞ in.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled, flat and stable, with a horizontal join or split running the width of the painting just above centre. Small paint losses along this make it plainly visible in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish fairly clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the aforementioned join, and further small spots scattered in the sky. It is difficult to discern any other intervention and the painting appears in overall fairly good condition.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
