Condition Report:
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Giovani Antonio Canaletto A venetian Capriccio view of an oval church beside a lagoon Oil on canvas, in a gilt wood frame The original canvas is lined, the lining is well preserved and provides good tension throughout. All the painted edges have been augmented , including a strip along the bottom edge. The paint layer is well preserved and many of the finer details to the architecture and figures are in good original condition. Under u-v light a scattering of re-touchings can be detected, particularly to the sky, where a reduction of the pale under painted layer has been undertaken. The natural sketchiness of technique employed in the foreground and sea is in good original state. Some of the darker more vulnerable shadows have been slightly compromised. The textured paint to the highlights and the clouds are in a good preserved state. No appreciable tonal advantage would be gained from removal of he varnish.
