GIOVENALE, Decimo Giunio (ca. 55-135/140) - Iuuenalis cum commento Ioannis Britannici. Venice: [s.e.], 1509.
A fine edition illustrated with a series of fine woodcuts, very modern in style. Third edition of the 16th century, after the first one published in Brescia in 1501 and the second in Milan in 1503 of Juvenal’s Satires with the commentary of Giovanni Britannico, which was preferred to that of other famous humanists for the whole century.
Folio (308 x 212mm). Large woodcut vignette on the title depicting Juvenal with the disciples seated on the benches, and other 15 smaller sized woodcuts at the incipits, historiated woodcut initials, text within commentary in smaller body, with final blank (some wormholes in the text, small wormtrack with slight loss to the first and final leaves, another wormtrack that does not touch the text in the inner margin of the central leaves, expert repair on the verso of the title without loss). Reassembled binding with contemporary wooden plates and later calf on spine, later metal clasps (modern guards). Edizione illustrata da una serie di pregevoli xilografie in stile moderno. Terza edizione cinquecentesca, dopo la prima pubblicata a Brescia nel 1501 e la seconda a Milano nel 1503, delle Satire di Giovenale con il commento di Giovanni Britannico, che per tutto il secolo XVI fu preferito a quello di altri umanisti (Treccani).

Grande vignetta xilografica al frontespizio raffigurante Giovenale con i discepoli assisi sui banchi, e altre 15 xilografie di minore formato agli incipit, iniziali xilografiche istoriate, testo entro commento in corpo più piccolo, con ultima bianca (alcuni fori di tarlo nel testo, piccola traccia con lieve perdita alle prime e ultime carte, altra traccia che non tocca il testo al margine interno delle carte centrali, esperta riparazione al verso del frontespizio senza perdite). Legatura riassemblata con assi di legno coeve e pelle posteriore al dorso, fermagli metallici posteriori (sguardie moderne).
