GIUSEPPE CESARI, CALLED THE CAVALIER D'ARPINO | PERSEUS AND ANDROMEDA

[ translate ]

Property of a California Collector
GIUSEPPE CESARI, CALLED THE CAVALIER D'ARPINO
Arpino 1568 - 1640 Rome
PERSEUS AND ANDROMEDA

oil on pietra paesina
5½ by 4⅜ in.; 14 by 11 cm.

Condition Report:
The marble support is flat and stable with no visible instabilities. There are some nicks and losses to the marble at the extreme edges, including one spot near the center of the upper edge. Although there are a few faint scratches to the painted surface, the painting is in overall very good condition. The artist has used some of the integral pattern of the colored marble as part of his composition, including the vein that runs through the upper center and he has highlighted the vertical striations of the marble as part of the composition. The delicate details remain well preserved. Inspection under UV may reveal a few old very thin and fine spots of retouching in the costume details and in the background, and some of the striations of the cave fluoresce under this light. The painting can certainly hang in its present state. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.
