Two Oriental Heads.
Pen and brown ink and chalk on cream laid paper mounted on an early album paper. 190x270 mm; 7½x10¾ inches. With the artist's name in ink, lower left center, and inscribed with the artist's name and album page identification "No. 204" in ink on the mount verso.Provenance: Richard Philipps (1744-1823), 1st Lord Milford, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, with his bookplate on the mount verso; his sale Sotheby's, London, December 13, 1950; private collection, Massachusetts.There are other examples of pen and ink drawings, in brown ink with curvilinear and cross-hatched lines, done by Cesari toward the end of his career, in various collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Head of a Bearded Man Wearing a Hood in Profile Facing Left, circa 1636-38 (accession number 2006.393.3), and a private collection, Study of a Man's Head in Profile, as well as another which was sold at Christie's, New York, January 28, 2021, lot 10, Head of a Man in Profile.
