* GORDON G HENDERSON DA (SCOTTISH b. 1951) STILL LIFE

[ translate ]

oil on canvas, signed framed image size 31cm x 26cm, overall size 47cm x 42cm Note: 'I was born and brought up in a tenement in the east-end of Glasgow in the 50s. What attracted me to the gable-end of the tenement were the design and colours of the wallpaper. There seemed to be a slice taken from the building that revealed a hidden lost story of lives now gone. In the late 70s and early 80s I photographed some of the last remaining tenements at a time when there was a policy of clearances. Many families were shipped out in the slum clearances of the 60s and 70s to new housing estates and life-long friendships were lost, but their memories lived on. The policy of tenement demolition is now considered short- sighted, wasteful and mostly unsuccessful. - Gordon G Henderson
