GREY, ZANE
Tales of Fishes. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1919

4to. Color frontispiece, 58 photographic plates; faint spotting to plates. Publisher's presentation binding of brown half morocco and marbled boards, gilt spine title, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers; rebacked to style, extremities rubbed.

First edition, deluxe copy, inscribed by George Takahashi, Grey’s cook, "From George Takahashi Dec 5th 1920", on front free endpaper.

Grey's account of his inshore and deep-sea angling for tarpon, striped bass, marlin and sailfish, much accomplished with light tackle. Grey also gives a thrilling report on the elusive "ghost of the flats," the bonefish, a species that went largely unrecognized as a game fish for decades but is now seen as one of an angler's greatest challenges. Grey's encounter left him convinced that stalking tailing bones was his finest angling experience, going so far to even praise them as exquisite table fare.
