GRODNENSKY, ELIYAHU ELIEZER (Chief Posek of Vilna, 1831-87).

Manuscript Document Signed. “Shtar Shelishut."

Document attesting that the Rabbi has received a note from the bank stating, 140 rubles were deposited under his name, and this money is to be in time, passed on to a girl as an inheritance from her aunt, Esther Strashun.

Son-in-law of R. Yisrael Salant, R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodnensky served as Head Posek of Vilna, the most senior position in the Vilna rabbinate. For historically, from the death of R. Shmuel, the rabbi of Vilna during the lifetime of the Vilna Gaon, the position of Chief Rabbi was kept unoccupied.

R. Eliyahu Eliezer was renown for his Torah genius, and at the age of 25 was appointed Dayan in Vilna. He served alongside R. Yosef (author of Porath Yosef) and R. Shlomo (author of Cheshek Shlomo).

After his death, his son-in-law, the celebrated R. Chaim Ozer Grodzenski, succeeded him in the Vilna Beth Din.

This document was written less than three weeks prior to R. Grodnensky's sudden demise at the age of 56, on the 27th Nissan, 1887.
