It is considered one of the first monographs of Latin historiography, focusing not only on military history, but also on the moral and political crisis of Rome. Salústio uses the pretext of the African war to denounce the corruption of the Roman nobilis and the rise of the populares, represented by the figure of Caio Mário. The original text, written by Salústio around 35 BC, narrates the conflict between Rome and Jugurta, king of Numidia, which took place between 111 and 105 BC. Royal provenance.

Elle est considérée comme l’une des premières monographies de l’historiographie latine, portant non seulement sur l’histoire militaire, mais aussi sur la crise morale et politique de Rome. Salústio utilise le prétexte de la guerre d’Afrique pour dénoncer la corruption de la nobilis romaine et l’ascension des populares, représentés par la figure de Caio Mário.
