[GUILLAUME DE LORRIS; JEAN DE MEUNG] Le romant de la rose. Codicille et testament de maistre Jeha[n] de meun : nouvellement imprimé [...]. Paris (A. Vérard) [c. 1505] 2 pts in 1 vol., 4to: [150], [42] ff. (washed copy erasing ms. marginalia and notes, lge stain on a4 and sl. to opposing p., sl stain to i3). Red morocco signed by Duru (1854) [and Marius Michel for the gilt decorations], blind-ruled covers with two double fillet frames, the inner frame orn. with gilt angular fleurons, gilt-orn. Aldine fleurons on spine with raised bands, double gilt fillets on edges, gilt inside dentelle, gilt edges (sl. traces of use, sm. stain on front cover). Third edition published by Vérard, "la première et la plus belle in-4°" (Bechtel). It is followed with "Le codicille et testament de maistre Jeha[n] de meun. Avecques lepitaphe du feu roy Charles septiesme qui trespassa a Meun", the author of the epitaphe is Simon Greban whose name appears in acrostic at the end. Edition in neat typograpy in Gothic types with small Grotesque initials, illustrated in the "Romant" with 88 square woodcuts in-text (incl. 3 repeats) specially executed for this edition, many of them appearing later in other works published by Vérard, and with 3 woodcuts in-text in the "codicille" (incl. 1 repeat). The 3 first lines of the title of "Le romant" and the 2 first of "Le codicille" are wood-engraved. Text of "Le romant" in 2 col.; large Vérard's mark at end of part I. Ref.
