Title: GUNFIGHTER No. 12
Place Published:
Publisher:EC [Indicia: Fables Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: November-December, 1949
Description:
CGC certified: VG/Fine (5.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Graham Ingels. Scripts: Gardner Fox, uncredited others. Art: Graham Ingels (2 stories), Johnny Craig. GPAnalysis: Only one recorded sale in the past seven years in any grade: a 7.5 sold for $276 in 2020.
Graham Ingels' conflict-free cover, depicting a gunfighter, some settlers and a friendly Indian all grinning in happy solidarity, hints at a serenity that eluded the artist during his EC heyday. It's possible that the endless pageant of murder, degeneracy and decay that he poured into his New Trend pages may have turned his mind down dark paths, exacerbating his penchant for alcoholic binges. Ingels refused to do a single interview so the truth about his inner struggles may never be known. What's indisputable is that after the Code clampdown, Ingels' abandoned his family and lived out his days in obscurity, giving private art lessons, dodging fans and refusing to discuss his ghastly past.
A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
