GUSTAVE COURBET | LA MER ORAGEUSE
Property from the Collection of J.E. Safra
GUSTAVE COURBET
French
1819 - 1877
LA MER ORAGEUSE
signed G. Courbet (lower right)
oil on canvas
25½ by 38½ in.
65 by 98 cm
Condition Report:
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
The canvas has been lined using a non-wax adhesive. Although the surface is quite smooth, this is typical for Courbet's work since he uses a palette knife to apply the pigment which does not give rise to impasto. This work is in beautiful condition. There are discolored remnants of old varnish visible under ultraviolet light and to the naked eye. There are a few tiny spots of retouching in the upper half of the right side. There are otherwise only a few isolated spots of retouching in the remainder of the work. None of the
patches that read darkly under ultraviolet light correspond to retouching. The work could be further cleaned, but it can also be hung in its current state.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
