Property from a Private Collection, Japan
GUSTAVE COURBET
French
1819 - 1877
PORTRAIT PRÉSUMÉ DE TONY MARLET
signed G. Courbet (lower left)
oil on canvas
18¼ by 15 in.
46.4 by 38.1 cm
Condition Report:
Lined. The work has a heavy varnish; widely patterned, stable craquelure across the picture surface; a pin dot dent just above the signature; and isolated minor frame abrasion along the extreme edges. Under UV: heavy varnish fluoresces green, which makes a review of the surface somewhat challenging, though there is scattered inpainting to address prior craquelure; brushier inpainting on figure's proper right eyebrow, to the right of his proper left cheek, around his proper right shoulder/ red scarf and at upper right edge; and broad fluorescence within the outlines of his hair and red scarf.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
