GUSTINUS AMBROSI (Eisenstadt, 1893 - Vienna, 1975).
"The Sacrifice of Isaac", 1927.
Bronze.
Signed and dated.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Measurements: 118 cm.
In this sculpture we see the sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22), specifically the moment when Abraham is stopped by the angel, although on this occasion he is not represented in the equation. This scene illustrates the theological concept that divine mercy rewards those who have faith, and in it we see Abraham's unquestioning acceptance of the divine message. The realistic and expressive style in the manner of resolving the mimicry and anatomy, as well as Abraham's ecstatic face, is tremendously noteworthy. His twisted body
Gustinus Ambrosi began his career prematurely. At first he devoted himself to music, but soon had to give it up due to an incipient deafness. He then turned to sculpture, producing his first work, "Man with a Broken Neck", with a Rodinian title and conception, at the age of 17. His career went beyond the national borders and he produced as many as 3000 sculptures. He specialised in biblical and mythological subjects.
