Gabriel Spat (American, 1890-1967)

Mers-les-Bains
Signed "Gabriel Spat" lower right, titled on a presentation plaque and on an unidentified label affixed to the reverse.
Oil on canvasboard, 5 1/2 x 14 in. (14.0 x 35.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Fine craquelure, scattered minor pigment losses, surface grime.
Estimate $500-700

Framed dimensions: 9 1/4 x 17 3/4 in.

The painting was removed from its frame for further examination. It was found to be oil on canvas, mounted to heavy pressed paperboard, a hand-fashioned version of canvasboard. The canvas was unevenly trimmed, and there are areas where the pigment extends over the edge of the canvas onto the paperboard. Two black graphite lines along the right edge. A lighter band along the top edge suggests that there may be some slight varnish discoloration. Minor abrasions to the sky in upper left quadrant. Discoloration to the right side edge, beneath the frame.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
