Gabriele Carelli, RA, Italian 1820/1-1900- Fishermen returning to port with Vesuvius in the distance; oil on panel, signed and inscribed 'G. Carelli / NAPOLI' (lower right), 32 x 23.5 cm. Note: Carelli was a Neapolitan artist and member of a dynasty of Italian landscape painters, which included his father, Raffaele, and his elder brother, Consalvo. Carelli’s works found popularity amongst a contemporary English elite, with figures including Queen Victoria and the Duke of Devonshire amongst those who purchased his work. The present work is rendered particularly interesting through its foregrounding of the four figures in the boat, whose bright clothes draw the viewer's attention, whilst the eruption of Vesuvius is almost sidelined, treated with muted hues in the background.
