Gabrielle Kruger
South African 1993-
Paint Vessel (Garden Series no. 4)
2024
acrylic, resin and repurposed paint bucket
height: 50cm; width: 45cm; depth: 39cm

Notes

Kindly donated by the artist in collaboration with EIGEN + ART Lab.

"In my studio, I work with large quantities of my own unique acrylic paint, which I mix with pigments in plastic buckets with a heavy-duty hand held drill mixer. Over time the dried paint builds up on both the drill and the buckets. I let it build up over time. Aware of the material's plastic-like behavior, I strive to minimise environmental impact. Instead of washing the buckets, I allow the buildup of leftover paint debris to transform the buckets into sculptural forms. I aim to create a circular practice where there's no waste, so I always reuse and repurpose the studio materials. Some of these paint buckets evolve into sculptural objects, which I then fully cover with paint, transforming them into unique vessels that contain the traces and remnants of my studio process. The Garden Series emerged from a garden-themed Wearable Painting created for one of my Performance Paintings, showcasing the performative nature of my studio processes. My work is always continuous and circular, with each painting (essentially paint-things) engaging in dialogue with one another. Sometimes, a painting evolves into another painting or even a sculpture, emphasising movement and continuity in my artistic journey."—Gabrielle Kruger
