Gallo-Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp w/ Deity - Sucellus

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Gallo-Roman, France, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A fine, mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a circular base, rolling walls, a concentric ringed shoulder, a recessed tondo, a petite fill hole, and a wide, arrow-shaped wick spout with a vent hole on the neck. The white-slipped lamp depicts the highly-detailed head of Sucellus, the Gallo-Roman god of the underworld in the central tondo with deep-set eyes, curved ears, a muscular jaw line, and a shaggy lion-skin pelt on top. Sucellus is a benevolent deity that enjoys the finer pleasures of life and equates the 'underworld' of the afterlife with a paradise filled with all manner of worldly enjoyments. A fine example replete with lovely color and sophisticated technique. Size: 4.125" L x 2.875" W (10.5 cm x 7.3 cm).

Condition Report: Repair to one side of wick spout and restoration to small area of shoulder above the head with some resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Surface wear commensurate with age and use, light char marks to wick spout, minor chips and fading to slip pigmentation, and minor nicks to wick spout and shoulder. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice craquelure to pigmentation in some areas.
